GGC NEWS - Wednesday 17 September, 2003.
Tee booking system to be introduced from Monday 13 October
The long-awaited tee booking system will be introduced for all play on Monday 13 October, 2003. Players will be able to book a tee time by contacting the club shop from 8am on Monday 29 September by calling 01243 755133. Tee times will run from 7.45am - 7pm weekdays, and from 7.30am - 7pm at weekends. The general rules and conditions are as follows:
- The club shop will control the start sheet and check in. All players must check in before play on the day;
- A reservation for general play may be made up to two weeks in advance on a first come, first served basis; and,
- Block booking of tee times may be made, provided that capacity allows and all names of the players are appended to the start times on the day. The golf club staff will closely monitor the situation to ensure that daily starting times are made available where applicable. This procedure may be subject to change at the discretion of the club management.
The basic for the system is as follows:
- 2 balls at 7 minute intervals (1 hour 40 minutes for 9 holes);
- The total 2 ball daily allowance is 29 slots over 3 hours;
- 3 and 4 balls at 9 minute intervals (2 hours for 9 holes);
- The total 3 and 4 ball allowance is 43 slots over 6 hours; and,
- All play will be from the 1st tee (front 9) and the appropriate course timing for the crossover shown in brackets will be allowed on the 10th tee (back nine).
Exceptions:
- A front nine booking can be made on the 10th tee providing the appropriate 1st tee slot is available;
- Where the 1st tee is reserved and the 10th tee is available to start from; and,
- Where general play allows.
The quest for length...

Goodwood Golf Club - History
On the evening of July 15th, 1892 six Sussex gentlemen came together to propose that a golf club should be formed for Chichester and the surrounding area. Despite the meeting’s low turnout, by the end of the evening, the new club had acquired 22 members - including three vicars and two unattached ladies! The nine hole course was formed at Peckham's Copse, North Mundham and the entrance fee and annual subscription came to one guinea apiece.
Around 1895, the sixth Duke of Richmond's family, especially his daughter Lady Helen, began to take an interest in golf so, when financial problems struck the infant course, probably due to its shortage of members, the Duke's offer for the club to relocate to its present home in the former kennels on the Goodwood Estate, must have come as a welcome relief.
These kennels had been built in 1787 for the hounds belonging to the third Duke of Richmond. Designed by the architect, James Wyatt, the building is described as the finest example of Sussex flintwork throughout the country. The interior today has seen modifications to accommodate the growing club, but the building’s exterior remains intact. Over the years, the club has seen many famous golfers and society faces including the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), the Duke of York (later King George VI), and, particularly during Goodwood’s famous Festival Glorious Goodwood, many well-known jockeys and racehorse owners.
In the 1950s, televised golf began to have its effect and interest in the game swelled and the club’s membership grew. In 1962, the club became the Goodwood Golf Club Limited.
Alterations and expansion to this spectacular Downland course, with its views across Chichester Harbour and the sea, followed and it remains a very popular and challenging golf course to this day.
Most recently the club has been taken back into the hands of the Earl of March, heralding a new and exciting era for this historic club.
